How Concerned Should I Be About This Noise My Truck Has Started Making?

A few months ago, my (poor, neglected) GMT400 truck started making a new noise on hot starts. Now it does it on a cold start, too. Does anyone have any idea what it could be, and how badly it needs to be fixed?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It never lasts longer than a second or two. It went from happening on hot starts to happening on all starts in about 20 starts over a few weeks.

Oh that’s a weird one. Seems to smooth right out after a few seconds

Going to spitball here and say check the starter. I wish the audio was a bi t better but it sounds like it might be sticking on for a bit.

huh. it’s not a rattle, clatter, or anything like that.  did you have the air cleaner off?  I wonder if the timing chain is stretched (or the sprockets are worn out) and you’re just hearing intake valve opening noise from the wickedly off cam timing.

No, I didn’t. I could record  another video with the air filter removed.

I don’t think it is mechanical. It sounds like some combustion/fuel mixture instability to me. I would not worry,....

any gumming in the fuel system. Does that have that weird transition FI in the carb thing?

ever run stabilizer/cleaner?

It’s got throttle body fuel injection, yeah. I haven’t run any sort of cleaner through it; is there one you recommend?

Nothing in particular. whenever i hear of a neglected vehicle I think, fuel system gummed.

My dads fr ie nd had one and we were trying to diagnose a few issues. that setup is interesting, its like the worst quirks of of FI and carbs. He would let his sit for months. So brake fluid brown, oil gunk, super neglected and the intake gunked up .

Seafoam or STP fuel injector cleaner. Dump a bottle into a full tank. I use the latter after every oil change.

In my defense, it’s mainly neglected in that I should be doing more work on it, but I start it at least once a month. But yeah, fuel system seems a likely suspect.

Yup, picked up a bottle of STP fuel treatment I’m about to pour in the tank.

Might be worth taking it out for an extended drive and run the fuel out of the tank, then refill and add some stabilizer.
